What is a Root Canal?

Root Canal Therapy | Donsdale Dental | West Edmonton | Family and General Dentist

Root Canal Treatment is part of a genre of dentistry called Endodontics, a word which means literally ‘inside the tooth.’ A root canal is a treatment option that can save the tooth from extraction when it becomes diseased or is dying. When the inner tissue of the tooth (the pulp) becomes infected or it dies, either from a crack or fracture, a deep cavity, or an injury to the tooth, root canal therapy can save the tooth from extraction. If an infected or dead pulp is left untreated, it can result in extreme pain which could lead to dental abscess or possible tooth loss.

Symptoms of Infection that Suggest the Need for a Root Canal

  • There is a sharp pain when you bite into food
  • The tooth is sensitive to extremes of hot and cold, and the pain lingers long after the source is removed
  • You notice a change of colour in the tooth as it becomes darker – an indication of nerve damage or that the tooth is slowly dying
  • Your gums experience pain or tenderness more frequently than normal
  • Toothache is affecting your ability to sleep and even wakes you up during the night
  • Over the counter pain remedies do not relieve the throbbing tooth pain you are experiencing.

The Root Canal Procedure

Root Canal Therapy | Donsdale Dental | West Edmonton | Family and General Dentist

Donsdale Dental is pleased to offer this common dental procedure which involves removing the damaged or infected nerve inside of the tooth (called the dental pulp), and then cleaning the root to remove any infected tissue that may be causing pain or swelling. A damaged nerve may cause your tooth to die, in which case the nerve must be removed for you to retain your tooth and stave off infection. The first step will be the administration of a local anesthetic to the tooth and surrounding area. All of our root canals are performed with the use of anesthetic to ensure that you remain comfortable and pain-free throughout the entire procedure. Next, a rubber dam is placed around your tooth to keep it free of bacteria from your saliva during the procedure. Next, a hole is created in the tooth to remove the pulp, and then the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Finally, the cleaned canal is filled with a special filling material called gutta-percha, and a filling will be applied to the tooth in order to strengthen and protect it. A crown is highly recommended to prevent future fracture or wear of the treated tooth.
