What to Expect During Your First Appointment at a New Dental Clinic

What to Expect During Your First Appointment at a New Dental Clinic

Scheduled your first appointment at a new dental clinic? Feeling a little unsettled? Your first visit doesn’t have to be a mystery. To help answer questions and alleviate worries, here’s what to expect during a new dentist appointment.

Record Creation

The receptionist will create a new patient record using your personal details and contact information. You’ll be required to complete a short questionnaire about your oral health as well as a comprehensive medical history to get a complete picture of you and your health. Previous dental records may also be transferred to your new dental clinic to help build your file. Be sure to ask any questions you have and share accurate information about your oral health history.

X-rays are common during initial appointments. They can diagnose problems otherwise unnoticed, such as infections, impacted teeth and concealed cavities. X-ray results will allow your dentist to complete a more comprehensive oral examination.

Modern X-ray machines emit minimal radiation, but you should always wear a lead apron as a precaution. Inform your dentist if you’re pregnant. We can still take X-rays on pregnant patients but prefer not to in the first trimester unless it is an emergency situation that requires them.

The process is quick and simple, so sit back and follow your dentist’s instructions.

Oral Examination

During the oral examination, your dentist will search for signs of tooth decay, gingivitis and periodontitis (gum disease). We also examine all soft tissues for any irregularities or lesions and assess the TMJ.

You’ll also likely be asked about:

  • Recent sensitivity or toothaches you’ve experienced
  • Activities you participate in that may affect the condition of your teeth (ex. sports)
  • Cosmetic concerns you may have

After the exam, a personalized treatment plan will be developed to improve your oral health.

The next step is a thorough cleaning. Your dentist or a hygienist will remove built-up plaque from your teeth to help prevent gum disease, cavities and bad breath. Then your teeth will be flossed and polished for some extra shine. Fluoride will then be applied at the end to help strengthen the surface of your teeth.

The cleaning process typically takes between 45 and 60 minutes to complete, and leaves your mouth feeling fresh and healthy.

Following your appointment at your new dental clinic, the receptionist will schedule your next visit. Regular check-ups should be completed roughly every six months, but you may visit your new dentist more frequently depending on your treatment plan.

Donsdale Dental always welcomes new patients. Whether you’re in need of a cleaning, filling or cosmetic procedure, we’re here to help. We look forward to meeting you soon!

Key Considerations for Choosing a Dentist

Key Considerations for Choosing a Dentist

It’s time for choosing a dentist and you have researched potential clinics. Now it’s time to choose the best option. It’s easy to draw a name out of a hat, but some thought should be given to the selection process.

Here are a few key factors to consider before making a final decision.

Customer-Centered Attitude

A friendly, attentive team will make you feel welcome and comfortable every time you visit. Even more importantly, choosing a dentist that takes the time to build a relationship, listen to your concerns and develop a personalized healthcare plan will leave you feeling confident in their abilities. Therefore, a customer-centered attitude should be one of your top considerations.

Background & Practices

When choosing a dentist, consider their background and practices. The dental professional you choose should be well educated and follow best practices to provide high quality care. Additionally, the rest of the team should be regularly educated about treatment options, new tools and emerging industry trends to ensure you receive the best possible treatment.

Clinic Appearance

In healthcare scenarios, cleanliness is essential. The clinic you choose doesn’t have to be ultra-modern, but it should present a professional working environment.

Finally, the overall convenience of a clinic will affect your decision. A dentist located near your home or workplace that offers suitable office hours will be more practical than alternatives. While convenience is an important factor, it shouldn’t be your primary focus. A customer-centered, well educated dentist that follows best practices will offer superior oral health care. If this type of individual isn’t found near your location, expand your search.

4 Easy Steps for Finding a New Dentist

4 Easy Steps for Finding a New Dentist

If you’ve decided to search for a new dentist, you’ve come to the right place. It’s important to be selective to ensure you receive the best possible care, but the process doesn’t have to be grueling. Here are four easy steps for finding a new dentist.

Preliminary Search

The simplest first step is to conduct an online search. Search engines offer a wealth of information and can quickly share the location, contact and service details of clinics in your surrounding area. Alternately, you could review the database of your local dental association. For example, the Alberta Dental Association and College has an online directory of dental clinics across the province. All you need to do is enter basic search criteria for a range of results.

It’s also wise to ask family members, friends, colleagues or your current dentist for recommendations. Everyone has an opinion and personal experience, making it easy to learn more about your options.

Gather Information

The next step is to gather information about each clinic to help with the decision making process. Visit each clinic’s website to learn more about customer experience and service offerings, as well as the dental team’s background. Reading online reviews can also aid with your final selection.

Your connections can offer invaluable feedback regarding the services, professionalism and atmosphere of the clinics you’re interested in. Reaching out doesn’t have to be time consuming – it can be as simple as asking for recommendations on social media or sending a few short emails.

Meet & Greet

dentist meet and greetOne of the most important steps for finding a new dentist is completing meet-and-greets. Visiting the top contenders will allow you to determine whether the dental teams are welcoming, professional and patient-centered. Meet-and-greets also give you the opportunity to ask questions, view the space and develop an overall impression of a clinic and its team.

Once again, this process doesn’t have to be time consuming or difficult. You can stop by a clinic on your way home from work or after your child’s hockey game. It only takes 10 minutes to say hello, meet the team and view the space.

Now it’s time for the selection phase. Narrow your options down to two or three clinics and consider the characteristics of each. Which clinic is more patient-centered? Which dental team makes you feel more comfortable? How convenient is each location?

Include the information you’ve gathered online, from your network and during each meet-and-greet to identify the best dentist for your needs.

Four Reasons for Finding a New Dentist

Four Reasons for Finding a New Dentist

We often stumble upon dentists rather than actively search for them. Maybe you’re still visiting the same dentist your parents introduced you to as a child. Perhaps you noticed a clinic being built in your neighbourhood and decided to book an appointment. Whatever the cause, sometimes we don’t put a lot of thought into our oral healthcare professions.

Here are four reasons for finding a new dentist.

Improved Dental Care

Did you know oral health can significantly affect your overall health? Studies show that gum inflammation can raise your risk of heart disease and stroke. In basic terms, gum inflammation may cause swelling in other parts of your body, which could contribute to cardiovascular disease.

The Canadian Diabetes Association has conducted studies showing that gum disease has also been linked to affecting the severity of diabetes. An infection could result in insulin resistance, which disrupts blood sugar control.

These are just a few examples of why improved dental care is important. It’s essential to find a dentist that is concerned about more than just your teeth, as expert treatment will enable long-term health benefits.

Superior Customer Service

Imagine walking into a poorly lit, stale dental clinic. The receptionist appears uninterested, your nerves are getting the best of you, and the dentist gets to work without asking any questions when you arrive. How does that make you feel?

Now consider walking into a bright, welcoming office. The receptionist greets you with a smile, you’re escorted to the dental chair, and the team talks you through your treatment procedure to calm your nerves. Much better, right?

Superior customer service is a common reason for switching dentists. A customer-centred clinic will make you feel more comfortable and confident and allow you to build an ongoing relationship with your dental team.

Service Offerings

You may need to find a new dentist if you have changing oral health needs. For instance, you may require dental implants or tooth restoration services from a specialised clinic. Alternately, you might search for a clinic that utilises more current technology and practices to elevate your oral health. Ensure you choose a dentist that can provide a range of high-quality services and offer recommendations for specialised treatments.

Location Change

Have you relocated to a new suburb or city? For convenience purposes, it’s practical to search for a new dentist. Ask your current dentist for recommendations, complete a Google search or scope the area for a few options.
